Sweet Home Alabama

Self guided 15-day tour

Welcome to Alabama! From its lush green forests in the north to the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast: Alabama is the epitome of the easy, relaxed lifestyle of the Southern states.

Known as the "Heart of Dixie"—the Southern states are also called Dixie—Alabama borders the Deep South states of Mississippi and Tennessee to the west and north, and Georgia and Florida to the east. History, culture, and landscape are incredibly diverse in the Cotton State. Alabama: a state of battlefields, Spanish moss-draped oaks, and swamps teeming with tasty crayfish. Sun-drenched beaches can be found along the Gulf Coast, while vast forests cover the Appalachian Mountains. Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, and Mobile provide urban flair with chic restaurants, trendy bars, and world-class museums and galleries.

Day 1: Nashville
Arrival at Nashville airport and individual transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Nashville
A city unto itself with numerous attractions; be sure to visit the Johnny Cash Museum and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Enjoy the vibrant life of jazz and blues here, where it truly pulsates in the hearts of all its inhabitants.

On the way to The Shoals, you should drive via Lynchburg/Jack Daniels….

3. Tag: The Shoals
After picking up the bikes, the Alabama tour begins. Music history was made in Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals, in northwestern Alabama. Superstars like Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones once frequented the studios of FAME in Muscle Shoals and Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield. None other than Keith Richards once called the region "Rock 'n' Roll heaven." These and other stories can be heard on a tour of the studios or during a visit to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

4. Tag: Huntsville
Huntsville, a charming city in the northern part of the state, is the birthplace of the moon landing. Here, Dr. Wernher von Braun developed the Saturn V rocket, laying the foundation for the world-famous Apollo missions. U. S. Space & Rocket Center It is the world's largest museum dedicated to space travel. Among the exhibits are an original Saturn V moon rocket and the Apollo 16 capsule. At the adjacent Space Camp, tourists can check in for multi-day simulated space missions.

Huntsville's old town comprises three historic districts, each with its own distinct character. In Twickenham, over 60 antebellum mansions line the streets, Old Town impresses with its Victorian-style houses, and Five Points exudes the charm of the 1950s and 60s.

Day 5: Birmingham
In the mid-20th century, Birmingham, Alabama's largest city, was at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute vividly portrays the movement's history. The museum is located in the heart of the Birmingham Civil Rights District, which also includes the 16th Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park, both sites of significant historical events. Other highlights of the city include the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, the world's largest motorcycle museum, and Gip's Place, one of the last remaining authentic juke joints in the United States.

Day 6/7: Gulf Shores
White beaches and Alabama's coast – Gulf Shores
In the far south of the state, on the Gulf Coast, we traveled to Mobile and Gulf Shores, where the beaches with the finest white sand are simply stunning! We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the famous restaurant, "The Hangout," which often has live music, browsed the boutique next door, watched the beach volleyball tournament, and took a beautiful walk on the beach…

Right next door to the east of Gulf Shores lies Orange Beach, which offers a wealth of outdoor and sporting activities: flyboarding, parasailing, diving, sport fishing, dolphin tours, golf, nature walks, bike and boat rentals, kayaking, to name just a few…it's simply amazing what's available here. And the restaurants and nightlife have plenty to offer as well!

Day 8: Mobile
Mobile, Alabama's oldest city, is a potent blend of French, Spanish, British, Creole, and African influences, reflected in its architecture, much like New Orleans. The first American Mardi Gras was celebrated here in 1703. In Mobile Bay, the USS Alabama, a World War II battleship, welcomes visitors aboard, and on a tour through the delta formed by the five rivers Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee, and Blakeley, nature lovers will encounter alligators and other animal inhabitants of Alabama.

Day 9/10: New Orleans
New Orleans is considered the birthplace of jazz. Music can be found on every street corner and in every souvenir shop. Armstrong Park commemorates the city's famous son, and the Jazz Museum offers a wealth of information. The French Quarter, the historic heart of New Orleans, beckons with its beautiful houses, shops, and bars. Along Royal Street, there are hundreds of photo opportunities. The paddle steamers "Natchez" and "Creole Queen" offer harbor tours and jazz dinner cruises. The historic St. Charles Streetcar travels through the Garden District with its beautiful antebellum homes all the way to Uptown. There, the Audubon Zoo and Park is a popular attraction for all ages. Above-ground cemeteries are as much a part of New Orleans' cityscape as voodoo and ghost stories. Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street, and Magazine Street offer numerous bars, pubs, restaurants, and music venues—the perfect place to experience live music in the "Big Easy."

Day 11: Natchez
Natchez is known as "the Beautiful" because it surrendered very early in the war. As a result, it suffered little damage and today boasts the most antebellum mansions in the entire South. An overnight stay in one of these mansions, such as Monmouth or Dunleigh, is highly recommended. Longwood is particularly worth visiting. This octagonal mansion has a fascinating history.

Day 12: Mississippi Delta – Greenwood
Between Natchez and Greenwood, you continue on the Blues – Highway 61. However, you can also drive parts of the route on the Natchez Trace Parkway. In the evening, you'll stay overnight at Tallahassee Flats (subject to availability) – old barracks from the cotton-picking era.

Day 13/14: Memphis
In the morning, you can start with a visit to Sun Records, the music publishing company where Elvis Presley's incredible career began. After a ten-minute drive, continue on to Graceland, the stately estate that the King of Rock 'n' Roll bought in 1957 and where he died twenty years later. It exudes an incredible atmosphere, and afterward, you can visit the King's Carshow Museum, where, of course, his Harleys are on display. Here, you can also find the best and most kitschy Elvis icons in all of America in a huge merchandise store. But don't expect empty paths or parking lots—around 650,000 visitors are ferried through Graceland every year.

15. Tag: Nashville

On the way back to Nashville, a stop in Jackson, TN at Casey Jones Village is worthwhile. Besides its legendary railroad history, don't miss a delicious and affordable Southern lunch at Brooks Shaw's Old Country Store .
