Pan-American
13 Days – The Great Pacific Coast Highway 1 Tour
Your daily tour itinerary from Los Angeles to Seattle
The Pacific Coast Highway is more than just a road—it's a place of longing. From Los Angeles to Seattle, you'll experience one of the world's most beautiful coastal roads on this 13-day Pan-American Highway leg: palm trees in LA, the cliffs of Big Sur, the Golden Gate Bridge, giant sequoias in Redwood National Park, wild beaches in Oregon, and the fjord landscapes of Washington. Plus, winding dream roads, vibrant cities like San Francisco and Seattle, small coastal towns, fishing villages, and unforgettable views of the Pacific. A tour full of highlights, history, and adventure—motorcycling at its finest, along the "dream road of the world."
Day 1 – Arrival in Los Angeles
Welcome to Los Angeles. After arriving at Los Angeles Airport, you'll make your own way to your conveniently located mid-range hotel near the airport. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight in Los Angeles.
Day 2 – Los Angeles
Today you have the day at your leisure. Embark on a city tour; Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Downtown LA, and Hollywood are also worth seeing. Overnight in Los Angeles.
Day 3 – Highway 1 – Santa Barbara – Solvang – San Simeon 400 km
In the morning, you'll pick up your bikes and leave Los Angeles to begin your tour through the Golden State of California. You'll then be on your way along the famous coastal road, Highway 1 or 101. This is part of the Pan-American Highway (the "dream road" and the longest road in the world – it runs from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego). You'll pass Malibu Beach and visit the famous seaside resort of Santa Barbara. For lunch, you'll reach the Scandinavian-influenced town of Solvang. In the afternoon, the tour takes you through the vast farmland of California to Pismo Beach, popular with surfers. After a short coffee break there, you'll reach the end point of today's stage, the small town of San Simeon, located directly on the Pacific Ocean. The attractions here include the sunsets and the country estate of newspaper publisher W.R. Hearst, Hearst Castle, with its over 160 rooms. You'll spend the night in the San Simeon area.
Day 4 – Highway 1 – Big Sur – Monterrey – San Francisco 370 km
You'll set off in the morning on the winding Highway 1, traveling via Ragged Point, Lucia, and Big Sur to Monterrey. Beforehand, you'll drive from Carmel along a motorcycle-friendly section of the 17-Mile Scenic Drive (incidentally, Clint Eastwood was once mayor of Carmel). Monterey became famous through Steinbeck's book "Canned Food." You can also take your lunch break here. In the early evening, you'll arrive at the end of today's tour, San Francisco. You'll stop briefly at Point Lobos, where, on a clear day, you'll already have a magnificent view of the Golden Gate Bridge. You'll spend the night in San Francisco near Fisherman's Wharf, where you can also spend the evening in a first-class seafood restaurant.
Day 5 – San Francisco
Today you have the whole day at your leisure in San Francisco. Why not take a walking tour or a cable car tour that includes downtown, Chinatown, the Cable Car Museum, and Fisherman's Wharf? Follow this up with a boat ride across San Francisco Bay. This will take you past Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge. Spend the night in San Francisco.
Day 6 – Pacific Coast Highway – 2500 curves – Dream road of the world 400 km
Early in the morning, you'll leave the city over the Golden Gate Bridge and drive along Muir Woods State Park. Over the next two days, you'll drive another 2,500 curves on this dream road. You'll follow the scenic coastal route past Bodega Bay and Mendocino. In the early afternoon, you'll reach the old Ft. Bragg, named after the former Indian fort, which is also known as the "Jewel of the Mendocino Coast." Today, you'll spend the night in the Garberville area, located directly at the south entrance to Humboldt Redwood State Park.
Day 7 – Humboldt State Park – Avenue of the Giants – Redwood National Park 380 km
Today, the Pan-American Highway takes you first to Humboldt State Park and through the Avenue of the Giants. These redwood giants grow up to 112 meters tall. You really feel small here... In Myers Flat, you have the opportunity, for a small fee, to drive through one or more of these gigantic sequoias (coast redwoods). You follow this dream road to Eureka and Humboldt Bay. This was the safe haven for gold seekers during the historic California Gold Rush of 1849. The journey continues through Redwood National Park, home to some of the tallest coastal redwood trees in America. These trees were so large that some were hollowed out and used to build treehouses. Passing Crescent City, you then drive inland on scenic Highway 199 and reach the state of Oregon. Your destination for today's stop and overnight stay is Grants Pass.
Day 8 – Wild Oregon – Crater Lake National Park 340 km
In the morning, you'll follow the Rogue River Valley and drive through Oregon's wild and untouched forest landscape. Just in time for lunch, you'll reach another highlight: the almost circular, 594-meter-deep Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park. It lies within a volcanic caldera. The colors in the crystal-clear water are reminiscent of the South Seas. The crater road takes you around this unique natural spectacle with interesting stops. On your way to the coast, you'll take another scenic road to Sutherlin, your overnight stop.
Day 9 – Oregon Sand Dunes – Devils Elbow – Lewis & Clark 440 km
You'll follow the picturesque Umpqua River and, if you're interested, visit the protected Oregon Sand Dunes in the morning, which easily rival those in the Sahara in height. Continue along the stunningly rocky coastline, passing the Devil's Elbow Lighthouse and other unique viewpoints. Along the way, you'll stop for lunch at the fishing port in Newport, where, of course, you'll enjoy fresh seafood. In the afternoon, you'll travel through the agricultural region around Tillamook, known for its cheese production. In the early evening, you'll reach your overnight destination in Astoria on the Columbia River. Overnight in Astoria.
Day 10 – Columbia River – Washington – Oyster Farms – Vampire Hunt in Forks 310 km
Today's tour schedule is for a relaxing day. In the morning, you'll cross the Columbia River and enter the state of Washington. You'll follow the winding highway—the coastlines and driving routes are once again extremely scenic. South Bend is home to the state's oyster region and is an excellent place for a coffee break. Traveling through Olympic National Park, which is home to a so-called cold rainforest with ferns and plants reminiscent of prehistoric times, you'll reach Lake Quinault on the Indian reservation of the same name after lunch. If you're interested, you can also visit one of the state-owned salmon farms along the way. In the early afternoon, you'll reach the small but now world-famous town of Forks. This town became world-famous through the first three Twilight Saga films, based on the books by author Stephenie Meyer. Wherever you look around, the films seem to come alive. Spend the night in the Forks area.
Day 11 – Olympic National Park – Sekiu – Port Angeles – Seattle 290 km
In the morning the tour continues across the Washington Peninsula to the town of Sekiu, popular with fishermen. During a coffee break there you can, with a bit of luck, inspect the salmon and halibut caught there. You will spend your lunch break in the Port Angeles area. Afterwards you can visit a Native American cultural center and the town of Poulsbo, founded by Scandinavian immigrants in the 19th century. You will then take the ferry to Seattle and, weather permitting, will see the city skyline and the towering Mount Rainier for the first time. After arriving in the late afternoon you will return your motorcycles to our local rental partner. You will spend the night in a hotel near Seattle/SeaTac Airport.
Day 12 – Seattle City Tour
This morning, you have the opportunity to explore downtown Seattle. Pike Place Market, famous for its salmon-throwing fishmongers, the Space Needle, the unique Seattle Aquarium, and the Harley-Davidson® shop are all within walking distance. Upon request, you can also tour the Boeing factory with an English-language guided tour. You can reflect on your tour over dinner together before it's time to say goodbye. Overnight in Seattle/SeaTac.

Weather
Late summer/
Autumn (September – early October) is the best time: warm days, clear visibility, little fog on Highway 1, and less rain in the north than in winter.
———————
Best seasons
May to October
Advantage: Dry, sunny, little rain. In California, perfect coastal drives, blue skies, pleasant temperatures.
Special feature: From June to August is high season – lots going on, higher prices, but also full festivals, events and summer feeling.
———————
September and October are considered insider tips: the weather is often still fantastic, but the large crowds are gone.
———————
Spring (March/April)
Advantage: The landscape is blooming, not so hot, fewer tourists.
Disadvantage: In Oregon & Washington it can still be cool and rainy.
———————
Less ideal
November to February
Although mild in Southern California, it is wet and cool towards Oregon/Washington, and often stormy on the coast.
Driving pleasure suffers, viewpoints can disappear in the fog.
