Balkan XXL – Guided motorcycle tour for all brands and models

Balkan XXL

From Austria to Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro to Albania and Macedonia

The Balkan Motorcycle Tour: For many motorcyclists, the Balkans represent a previously unexplored mystery. Wild and original, an unpolished natural jewel. And again and again you ask yourself the question: Is that even possible with my road bike? Yes it works! And it's sensational! Incredible roads, breathtaking panoramas and open amiable people. The tour takes us from Austria via Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro to Albania and Macedonia. The return journey includes Montenegro and the unique coastal road from Croatia back to Austria.
What we experience here is fantastic: Whether the cultural diversity of Sarajevo, the medieval city of Mostar, the largest gorge in Europe or the incredibly majestic landscape along some sections of the route, the Balkans hold treasures that are waiting to be discovered! This tour combines the right amount of culture with motorcycle routes that are second to none. Some mountain roads wind around the mountains like masterfully knotted ribbons and offer a winding landscape that makes every motorcyclist's heart beat faster. The stages are balanced and varied. They lead through cities and villages, through mountains and gorges, over passes, along rivers, lakes and the coast.

Day 1 – Saturday Graz (Austria) – Slovenia – Croatia – Banja Luka (BiH) 380 km
Early in the morning we meet at the agreed starting point near Graz. After all the luggage has been stowed in the support vehicle, we start our journey together, mainly on the highway, directly to Bosnia & Herzegovina to the capital of the republic of Srbska, to Banja Luka. Our hotel is located right in the center. After arrival, we take a leisurely stroll through the old town. Overnight stay in Banja Luka (BiH).

TIP: There is a hotel at the starting point of the trip. For participants who have a longer journey to Graz, it is recommended to arrive the day before and spend the night there. And if you want to come to the start of the trip with a car and motorcycle trailer, you can park your car at the hotel during the tour.
TIP: If you can't or don't want to bring your luggage to the starting point on your motorcycle, you are welcome to have it picked up at your home by means of a luggage service. We will then bring it to the start of the tour in the support vehicle!

Day 2 – Sunday Banja Luka (BiH) – Sarajevo (BiH) 270 km
Following the course of the river Vrbas to the south, we leave Banja Luka. On the way we visit picturesque watermills, a unique waterfall and an old railway bridge. In the afternoon we will arrive in the capital of Bosnia: Sarajevo. During a guided walk through the historic old town, we will be introduced to the history and culture of this very extraordinary and impressive city. Overnight stay in Sarajevo (BiH).

Day 3 – Monday Sarajevo (BiH) – Mokra Gora (SRB) 290 km
The Visegrad Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the cultural highlight of the day. The route there along picturesque gorges is a more than worthy preparation until we finally reach the border to Serbia. The communist past is still visible and tangible in some places. The mix with modern development is what makes Serbia so special. Overnight in Mokra Gora (SRB).

Day 4 – Tuesday Mokra Gora (SRB) – Bosnia & Herzegovina – Zabljak (MNE) 215 km
We leave Serbia again and set off for Montenegro: Shortly after Mokra Gora we cross the border back to Bosnia & Herzegovina. Around noon we finally reach the Montenegrin border. Why this country was called Montenegro (Black Mountain) is impressively demonstrated to us here. After driving through the breathtaking Dumitor National Park (it goes up to 1,900 m above sea level) we reach our overnight stay, the highest city in Montenegro. Overnight in Zabljak (MNE).

Day 5 – Wednesday Zabljak (MNE) – Kolasin (MNE) 100 km
With the Tara Gorge, the deepest gorge in Europe (and second deepest in the world) is on the program. And half a day of rest. We leave the hotel a little later and have a contemplative day until we reach our hotel in the ski and climatic health resort of Kolasin in the early afternoon. In the wellness area of the hotel we can end the rest of the day comfortably.

Day 6 – Thursday Kolasin (MNE) – Shkodra (ALB) 250 km
We enjoy the winding mountain roads in southeastern Montenegro once again before we reach the Albanian border and visit the next country of the tour. The condition of the roads, and also the friendliness of the Albanians, will surprise us. During a guided tour of the city in German, we learn a lot about the city and Albania, which is so foreign to us. Overnight in Shkodra (ALB).

Day 7 – Friday Shkodra (ALB) – Ohrid (MAK) 320 km
Well rested, we can start a little earlier, because there is a lot to see: With Macedonia (also: Macedonia) we reach the southernmost country of the Balkan XXL Tour. But before we get to the Macedonian border, we dive deep into the Albanian hinterland. On roads with different quality levels (but everything is easily rideable for street motorcycles), the tour takes us up into the Albanian mountains. Many curves, as well as a high experience factor guarantee an extremely exciting day! The equally winding drive along the reservoir near the Macedonian town of Debar finally leads us towards Lake Ohrid. Overnight stay in Ohrid (MAK).

Day 8 – Saturday Ohrid (MAK) – Tirana (ALB) 170 km
In the morning we have the opportunity for a short walk along the shore of Lake Ohrid, then we leave for Albania again. Via well-developed, picturesquely situated roads we reach the capital of Albania in the late afternoon. Our hotel is located directly in the center, during a guided tour of the city in German, we will be introduced to the eventful history of Tirana. Overnight stay in Tirana (ALB).

Day 9 – Sunday Tirana (ALB) – Budvar (MNE) 200 km
We finish our visit to Albania and return to Montenegro. This time, however, not in the mountainous part: Shortly after we have passed Shkodra, we come to the border and then reach the world-famous Adriatic coastal road "Jadranksa Magistrala" for the first time on the tour, which we drive north. Now we have earned a day of rest: Two nights at the hotel by the sea in the Budvar area (MNE) follow.

Day 10 – Monday Budvar (MNE)
Day at leisure. We enjoy the amenities of our hotel by the sea and have a good time. If you can't get enough of driving, take a trip to the nearby mountains on your own. Overnight stay in the Budvar area (MNE).

Day 11 – Tuesday Budvar (MNE) – Dubrovnik (CRO) 210 km
After the rest day, we start a little earlier again, because there is a lot on the program: First we drive in the adjacent national park to a pass with almost 1,000 m above sea level and taste the very special local ham. Then we "experience" the famous Bay of Kotor together in the Balkan Tour and later cross the border to Croatia. Overnight stay in the Dubrovnik area (CRO).

Day 12 – Wednesday Dubrovnik (CRO) – Neum (BiH) 70 km
We use the morning for an extensive visit to the impressive city of Dubrovnik. In the afternoon we enjoy the coastal road again until we enter Bosnia & Herzegovina again at Neum (BiH). Overnight stay in Neum (BiH).

Day 13 – Thursday Neum (BiH) – Mostar (BiH) – Makarska Riviera 230 km, part of the Balkan Tour
Along narrow country roads, the path of the Balkan Tour leads us to the world-famous city of Mostar (BiH). Once there, we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Stari Most, which means "Old Bridge"After this cultural highlight, we head back to Croatia. We drive along the coastal road to the Makarska Riviera. Overnight stay in the area Makarska (CRO).

Day 14 – Saturday Makarska (CRO) – Crkvenica (CRO) 360 km
In order to really enjoy the most beautiful part of the Jadranska Magistrala, we bridge the route around the densely populated areas of Split and Sibenik on the highway. North of Zadar we leave the highway and then have about 150 km of "cruising along the coastal road" at its best and with breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea ahead of us. In the late afternoon we reach the last hotel of our exciting Balkan round trip and can celebrate the end in a convivial atmosphere. Overnight stay in the area Crkvenica (CRO).

Day 15 – Sunday Crkvenica (CRO) – Slovenia – Graz (Austria) 360 km
Unfortunately, today it is time to say goodbye to the Balkan Tour. With many beautiful memories in our luggage, we make our way back home. Up to the tour starting point near Graz, your guide will again lead you mostly along the motorway. End of the tour.
TIP: For those for whom the route to Graz would be a detour on the way home, you can say goodbye to the other tour participants as soon as you leave the hotel and start your way home on your own. If the luggage does not fit on the motorcycle, we can send it home via luggage service. This article is supported by a sponsor Tag-Der-Staedtebauförderung.de .
