Myrtle Beach Bike Week
A motorcycle tour through South Carolina.
Day 1 – Arrival in Atlanta 0–30 km
Arrival in Atlanta
Overnight stay: Atlanta
Day 2 – Atlanta → Greenville approx. 250 km
In the morning you take over your motorcycle - then your big South Carolina adventure begins. You leave Atlanta and head northeast to Greenville. After arriving in Greenville, you will have time to get to know the city and the surrounding area. Greenville is an ideal starting point for your first real motorcycle days in the mountains.
Greenville, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, describes itself as cool and up-and-coming, partly because of its widely recognized Downtown District design with shopping, art, festivals and a 20m waterfall. In recent years, Greenville has become a hot tip in the foodie scene – generally and especially because of the Euphoria Festival, which takes place annually in September.
Overnight stay: Greenville
Day 3 – The mountain roads around Greenville approx. 250–300 km
Today you can expect a really nice biker leg through the upstate of South Carolina. You drive towards Caesars Head, where a winding mountain road and great views await you. The viewpoint is located on the Blue Ridge Escarpment and offers sweeping views over the landscape. Then you can continue via SC-11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, and incorporate Table Rock into your lap. The official park administration explicitly recommends SC-11 as a road trip through the state parks of this mountain region.
Route: Greenville → Caesars Head → SC-11 → Table Rock → Greenville
Overnight stay: Greenville
Day 4 – Greenville → Columbia approx. 180–220 km
You leave the mountainous region and drive slowly through the interior of South Carolina. The roads become straighter, the landscape wider and calmer. Columbia is a good stopover for experiencing South Carolina not only along the coast but also in the heart of the state.
The capital city of Columbia has been the cultural and political center since 1786, boasting an excellent state museum, the River Banks Zoo, and a botanical garden. The huge Lake Murray, with 840 km of shoreline and diverse water sports opportunities, is very close by. The State House should be a must-see on every visit to Columbia. Here too, history comes very close, given the marked bullet holes from the Civil War. Admission is free, and guided tours are also free.
Overnight stay: Columbia
Day 5 – Columbia → Ride the Lake Murray Loop! Approximately 250 km
Curvy country roads, dreamy views and a pure motorcycle feeling:Discover the most beautiful sides around Lake Murray with us – an unforgettable tour from and to Columbia, South Carolina!
Day 6 – Columbia → Myrtle Beach approx. 300 km
Our route follows a variety of country roads from Columbia through small towns and the beautiful Lowcountry countryside to the Atlantic coast.
Our goal: Myrtle Beach Bike Week sun, beach, bikes and lots of Harley feeling!
Myrtle Beach – right in the middle of biker paradise
The official Myrtle Beach Bike Week has been held since 1940 and is one of the major motorcycle events on the American East Coast.
Motorcycling directly on the Atlantic coast
You'll meet other motorcyclists everywhere, be able to look at extraordinary machines, and quickly strike up conversations with people. There are rides, events, vendors, vendors, entertainment and numerous biker-friendly meeting places. Bike Week is spread not only across Myrtle Beach itself, but also over large parts of the Grand Strand. Especially for a Harley rider, Myrtle Beach during Bike Week is an experience that goes far beyond a normal motorcycle tour: you are in the middle of a huge biker community.
Overnight stay: Myrtle Beach – 1st night
Day 7 – Myrtle Beach and surrounding area approx. 100–180 km
Today you can decide what you're in the mood for: the beach, bike life, or a short motorcycle tour.
My recommendation: Myrtle Beach → Murrells Inlet → Pawleys Island → Georgetown → back to Myrtle Beach
A beautiful, relaxed coastal circuit with water, small towns and a Lowcountry atmosphere.
Overnight stay: Myrtle Beach – 2nd night
Day 8 -approx. 80–150 km
Your second full day in Myrtle Beach will deliberately remain flexible. You can take a relaxing drive to North Myrtle Beach and Conway, or simply stay on the beach.
If you want to experience the typical biker atmosphere, you have plenty of time today for a leisurely tour, photos and a relaxing evening. We have plenty of cool biker bars for you in the roadbook!
Overnight stay: Myrtle Beach – 3rd night
Day 9 – Myrtle Beach → Georgetown → Charleston approx. 180–220 km
Today you continue south along the coast. You leave Myrtle Beach and, where appropriate, take smaller roads via Georgetown.
Settled by the Spanish as early as 1526, it later became an important port in the era of rice plantations. Although that time has long since passed, this Southern era is omnipresent ‚in Georgetown itself and on the surrounding estates, such as Hopsewee Plantation‘. Sixteen streets in Downtown are listed on the National Historic Register.
People enjoy strolling through the shops and cafes on Front Street, watching the unloading of the shrimp boats, and strolling along the Harborwalk, which winds along the Sampit River. The further south you go, the more you immerse yourself in the typical landscape of the South Carolina Lowcountry: flat terrain, water, marshlands and large oak trees.
Overnight stay: Charleston
Day 10 – Charleston and surrounding area approx. 50–120 km
You don't have to drive a long distance today. Enjoy Charleston and, if you like, do a little biker ride. The picturesque port city, founded in 1670, is often called the Pearl of the South’. Like almost no other city in America, Charleston embodies the charm and elegance of the Old South. Strolling through the exemplarily restored old town with over 900 listed buildings, cobblestones, winding alleyways, enchanted gardens, magnificent manor houses in the shade of moss-covered oaks, one is reminded of ‚Gone with the Wind‘ when wealthy plantation owners retreated here to their townhouses.
Tip: Visit the Boone Hall Plantation.
A relaxing day between motorcycle saddle, Atlantic Ocean and one of South Carolina's most beautiful historic cities.
Suggested day trip: Charleston → Folly Beach → James Island → Charleston or towards Sullivan's Island
Overnight stay: Charleston
Day 11 – Charleston → Beaufort approx. 120–150 km
One of the most beautiful stages for the atmosphere. You continue driving through the Lowcountry towards Beaufort. The landscape is now completely different from Greenville: no mountains, but water, marshland, rivers and the famous large oaks with Spanish moss.
Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, one of the largest Sea Islands here in the Atlantic Ocean. Magnificent villas and tranquil gardens embody a Southern idyll that can be wonderfully enjoyed on a carriage ride. The city center, designated as a Historic District and featuring over 100 listed buildings, very often served as a film set. Galleries, boutiques, cafes and restaurants with excellent local cuisine are picturesquely situated under ‚live oak trees‘ with low-hanging Spanish moss or along the waterfront. (559)
Overnight stay: Beaufort
Day 12 – Beaufort and the Sea Islands approx. 150–220 km
Today you can expect one of my favorite rounds of the entire tour:
Beaufort → St. Helena Island → Hunting Island → back to Beaufort
You are driving through a beautiful coastal landscape. Here you should take your time, stop again and again and enjoy the atmosphere.
St. Helena Island, about 8 km east of Beaufort, lies this quiet island with its rich Gullah culture and history, which dates back to the descendants of slaves from Africa. Here lies the Penn Center, now a museum founded in 1862, shortly before the end of the Civil War, by Quaker missionaries to give freed slaves the missed schooling for a new life. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his ‚I have a Dream‘ speech in one of the cabins on the grounds.
Hunting Island State Park
The most popular of the 47 state parks boasts thousands of acres of marshes and coastal vegetation, an 8 km long sandy beach, and a saltwater lagoon. The historic lighthouse, dating from 1870, is the only one open to the public in South Carolina. Admittedly, going up isn't as easy as going down. But the 167 steps to the top of the lighthouse were worth every step if you're rewarded with beautiful views of the sea and coastline at the top.
Overnight stay: Beaufort
Day 13 – Beaufort → Bluffton approx. 200 km
Today we'll discover Hilton Head Island on a varied motorcycle tour. Away from the main road, the route takes us via Spanish Wells Road and Marshland Road, past lagoons, marshlands and typical Lowcountry nature.
The route continues south along Shelter Cove and Broad Creek to the popular Coligny Beach. The route then takes us back across Sea Pines Circle and the bridge towards Bluffton.
Overnight stay: Bluffton
Day 14 – Bluffton → Aiken approx. 150–180 km
We leave the beautiful Lowcountry and drive inland to South Carolina on varied roads. Passing old oaks, swamps and marshlands, the route takes us through small, typically American places before the landscape slowly transforms into vast forests and fields.
Along the way we experience the charm of the rural South, historical sites and endless roads – true Southern Riding feeling! Our daily destination is Aiken, known for its magnificent old villas, shady streets and its traditional horse culture.
In this very well-maintained setting, almost everything revolves around horses. Aiken, in Thoroughbred Country, was originally a retreat for wealthy plantation owners from Charleston and later a wintering ground for northern Americans who brought their hobbies with them.
Overnight stay: Aiken
Day 15 – Aiken → Atlanta approx. 270–320 km
Today we're heading back towards Atlanta. That concludes your tour of South Carolina. You only leave South Carolina on this final stage of the drive and return to Atlanta.
Overnight stay: Atlanta
Day 16 – Atlanta 0 km
Drop off your motorcycle and return flight – with hopefully many great memories of 16 days and the whole diversity of South Carolina.
